>North to Alaska – 14 > >July 3, 2007 > >With only 200 miles to go today and a black sky west of us we took our >time and made it to the ferry by 10:40. By 12:00 we were in the US. WE >ARE IN ALASKA!! The road from Dawson City to the border was to be 60 >miles of a real road. Actually there were a few short sections of >macadam and the last 10 miles. I think Canada wanted us to remember >what we left. The balance of the road was loose gravel and rough. We >were able to maintain a reasonable speed but we did have a few pucker >moments where the gravel was thick or there were ruts. The 60+ miles went fast. > >The road in the US had no pretence of being a good road. It was gravel >all the way to the town of Chicken, 45 miles away. If it’s too dry the >dust is horrible; too wet and it’s near impossible. The weather looked >good so we went. I think Jim will forgive me. There were enough clouds >moving across the road to maintain standing water from rain during the >night. This made the road very “greasy” in spots. We both had many >significant pucker moments and were very happy to get a rest in Chicken >all in one piece. Al and Tom were there when we arrived. We had lunch. >Everything was expensive except a whole chicken dinner. It was the last >thing on the menu and it cost only $1.50, what a deal! The people next >to us ordered one. It came in a bowl in the shape of a hard boiled egg. > >We stopped in Tok for the night. The other two continued on. We’ll >probably meet them in Fairbanks. The last 20 miles was into another >thunder storm, no problems!
