>North to Alaska – 8 > >June 27, 2007 > >Today there were 4 of us. The more people the more problems and the >more flexible we all need to be. We had breakfast a little after 7:00 >in the motel. We all decided we needed to do some shopping and Tom >needed to get to a UPS to send some stuff home. So, two groups of two >took off in different directions to do different things. Since we were >planning to end the day with a ride on the Going To The Sun Highway >through Glacier National Park we decided we would probably all meet there a little later. >Jim and I rode the entire day alone. The weather was great, a few >cumulus clouds and comfortable, maybe a little warm temperatures. It >was all back roads and the scenery made the ride easy. Snow topped >peaks, rolling hills, hidden lakes, picturesque farms and camps, neat >towns and everywhere we stopped the people were great! Today we had a >ride of 270 miles planned. It was to be an easy day with plenty of time to see Glacier. > >We stopped for lunch just short of the park and as we were leaving Tom >and Al pulled into the restaurant. We made our way to the park entrance >where we saw a sign that said Logan Pass was closed. Apparently there >was a road washed out and repairs would be completed this Sunday. We >could ride 29 miles in and 29 miles out for $25. We decided we didn’t >need to see Glacier that bad. We spent the whole day riding up to the >west side entrance now we needed to go to the east entrance. We were >going to ride 45 miles through the park. The ride around was 100 >miles…oh well. The roads were good, the traffic was light and we made good time. It was another good day! > >We are planning an early start tomorrow because we have a long day planned. >We will need to fill up before we get to Canada tomorrow morning. The >gas here is 3.49 per gallon, almost as much as the $3.70 we paid near >the entrance to Yellowstone. I would guess that gas will be more >expensive in Canada….we’ll see.
