>North to Alaska – 6 > >June 25, 2007 > >Today was a relatively easy day, 340 miles or so. We woke up a little >late but were on the road close to 8:00. There were clouds and sun and >it was already getting hot. Not to fear. As soon as we started riding >it became overcast….grey, black, white, everything but blue. We didn’t >suit up and we didn’t get rain. Today was another interstate day. Out >here though there are almost as many RVs as there are trucks and there >weren’t many of either. Last night we tried to find some anti Monkey >Butt powder (medicated Gold Bond) because we were both hurting a bit. >There wasn’t any in Moorcroft, our home for the night, but we did get >some baby powder. It didn’t work so well. We finally found the Gold >Bond near the border to Montana after a great breakfast. We didn’t fill >up because we wanted another break in 30 to 40 minutes. The fuel in >Wyoming is a bit expensive so I thought I would wait to get fuel in >Montana. There were signs all along the rte 90 that warned us if we >wouldn’t have services for say 31 miles, or 16 miles. So when I was 10 >miles from the border and I didn’t see any signs I assumed (this always >gets me into trouble) we would see another gas station shortly….oh >well. We were both 25 miles into our reserves before we found some gas. >This place was a little run down. It had 4 double pumps and only ½ of one was working…at least we had gas! > >Jim noticed on the way into the gas station that his shift lever was loose. >It looked to us that it was a design problem and after finding the >correct size wrench, in the store, we were able to get it back together >again and it was secured with a tie wrap! Jim wasn’t able to get it >fixed at a local Kawasaki dealer in Red Lodge, Montana, our home for >the night but the tie wraps should hold. We are about 70 miles of great >motorcycle roads from Yellowstone. We are on the Beartooth Highway >which takes us through a pass of about 10,500 ft. Then it will be a >ride through Yellowstone…we hope. The weather forecast is good, the >other two guys, Tom and Alan, will be in Yellowstone, maybe we’ll see them, and we can’t wait to see Old Faithful. > >With a short day today and another tomorrow we hope, our butts will get >a break. I hope they like the Gold Bond!
