North to Alaska – 2 June 21, 2007 Jim and I got an early start and stopped to have a good breakfast so, we were on the road close to 9:00AM. The weather was beautiful and it wasn’t long before it was hot. A thermometer onboard read 105 in the sun. We didn’t have much of a problem while we were moving but it was really hot when we stopped. We also complained a lot. We still spent some time trying to get our bikes and all our gear the way we like. More to do tomorrow! We traveled about 400 miles and ended our day at 4:00 (5:00 EST). We stopped just short of the Indiana boarder, just southeast of Chicago. Not bad for our first two days. We spent most of the day working our way through the back roads of Ohio. It was mostly flat but there were some rolling hills. Mostly it was farm country. It was a good cross section of rural America. The number of trucks we encountered today was significantly less than yesterday but they were still something to contend with. Shortly after moving onto our first back road this morning we encountered a large truck coming the other way. I must have been day dreaming a bit because the shock wave (wind) almost knocked me over. It really surprised me. We were used to following trucks, not passing them in opposite directions. That was the last time I was day dreaming when a truck passed. We are still trying to stay off of the main roads. We had a nice dinner at a local Crab House….nowhere near the sea….but still good.
