As usual we left the marina early. We had to contend with some shallow water just North of the marina but since the tide was only 1/2 way down we had no problems. We entered South Carolina early and spent the day meandering North. We did 57 miles today and stopped at 5:00PM. We fully intended to travel late and anchor just off of the ICW but as with most plans it really turned out to be a bad idea. With a questionable forecast we didn't expect much but it turned out to be a very nice morning. As the day went by the winds picked up till we had 15 to 20 kts with gusts to 25, not bad. In fact, we put up some sail when we could to give us a bit of a boost; after all Boundless is a sail boat! Yesterday and today we negotiated 3 bridges each day. Yesterday it was one fixed, 65 feet, and to draw bridges. Today it was two fixed, 65 feet, and one draw bridge. We have had 1 to 2 feet of clearance on each of the fixed bridges....I do like the bridges in Georgia and South Carolina much better than those in Florida! The weather report from last night suggested a possibility of rain late today. Rain is OK so we set our plans to make our last day into Charleston, where we were to meet my brother Ken, easy! As we were approaching St. Helena Sound we heard a weather report that changed our minds. There was a severe thunder storm watch for our area from 5 till 7:00pm. High winds, 40 to 50 mph, along with heavy rain etc. was predicted. A bit of a change from the night before. We looked back and saw black clouds on the horizon. I decided to find a marina for another safe and easy night. We found the closest marina and made arrangements for a nights stay. We were racing the clouds down the sound! We turned off of the sound and knew it was going to be close. We almost made the marina before the front hit. We were 10 minutes away from the marina when the wind went to almost 40 kts. We saw a water spout trying to pull the water out of the sea just in front of us on the other side of the marina as we approached. The spot they picked for us called for a down wind approach, WITH THE TIDE! They were waiting for us at the dock. I decided to wait for the passage of the front and approach the dock in a little less wind. We waited about 45 minutes motoring back and forth in front of the marina before the winds dropped to below 20 kts with some higher gusts. We started our approach for the space suggested. I did a fast 180 in the very constrained space and managed to put boundless in a good spot for the night. To our surprise we found the marina to be very nice! It was also the least expensive we have found so far on the ICW. We were just settling down for the night when we heard a knock. My brother Ken had driven his Boston Whaler about 50 miles to join us for the trip to Charleston. He also had the bad weather and wind but he was much more vulnerable than we were. He really didn't know where the marina was so he just pulled up to a private dock and asked for permission to leave his boat for the night and if they would please call a cab for him. The owners of the home were very nice and very helpful. Not only did they allow him to use there dock but they drove him to the marina where we were staying and offered to drive him back in the morning to get his boat. Now that is southern hospitality. Now Boundless has the three Schwenker boys as crew.....this should be interesting!
