February 16th-17th One Thousand Miles--Puerto Rico to Fort Lauderdale We arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico at 2:30 p.m. (we decided to put our clocks on east coast time) and dropped off Shawn and Jon. We were very sorry to see them leave. They have been soooo helpful throughout our entire voyage. Shawn supported us every step of the way in every way imaginable!!! She was always giving the Captain her expertise on the sail trimmings which he almost always agreed. Shawn was always there to help everyone out on their watch and when Jon wasn't unconscious (asleep since his watch is at 3 a.m. to 6 a.m.), he was there to help out as well!! Jon also helped with the famous wing-on-wing...going on the bow with Rudy and me to place the pole on the Jib sheet and he did the 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. watch which no-one else wanted!!! Both Shawn and Jon made our crossing easy and fun!!!! THANKS SHAWN AND JON!!! As we entered and left the harbor, a U.S. Coast Guard boat was protecting a Naval ship that was being repaired. The boat ran parallel to us and followed us in and out of the harbor for about 5-10 minutes each way. This is the first time Rudy and I have been by ourselves since we left the Canaries. We now will be doing all the watches ourselves. I started around 6 p.m. and went to around 10:30 p.m. and then Rudy went to around 3:30 a.m. We go until we feel tired and then wake the other person for their turn at a watch. The moon is out now and it is a warm and friendly sight at night. It is surprising how dark it can be without it. It is almost half moon and it is in the shape of a cup.... At around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday the 17th, Rudy saw a Cruise ship right behind us. Rudy called the ship on the VHF radio to confirm that the captain of the Cruise Liner saw us. Rudy also confirmed that we would stay our course. We then saw the ship slowly change his course and she ran parallel to us. That was the closest ship we had seen so far and it was in the daylight which made it more friendly!!! We have seen dolphins for the last three days, playing and diving and just having fun!!
