May 19th to May 31st Rudy and I rode our bicycles around town looking for a phone store, vegetable market and a butcher shop in Kos, Greece. We found everything we were looking for and more!! Rudy found a scooter for less than $10 a day. We rode the scooter along the south coast until the road ended treating ourselves to an ice cream for our accomplishment!! As we were on our way back to the boat, we passed a motorcycle shop. We both wanted something a little bigger and got a motorcycle for about $20 a day. The next two days we rode up the north coast and found some interesting scenery. Allan Wood on Free Spirit came into the marina and he and Rudy flew kites for two days. On May 20th, Shawn and Nancy arrived at the Kos Marina and the five of us went out to dinner and then played dominoes on our boat. Al left the next day and we checked out to leave the following day. May 21st was Stacy's birthday and we waited to leave until 2 p.m. so we could call her at a reasonable time. (7 hours difference) After wishing her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, we left the fuel dock for Limin Mandraki, Nissiros. (Niyros or Nissyros or.there are many different spellings for the same Greek islands, but.IT IS ALL GREEK TO ME!!!) We arrived at 7 p.m. and went alongside the wall in the small harbor. While eating dinner, we were told we had to move our boat because of the ferryboats coming in early in the morning. So after eating we went stern-to and as we were settling in, we had a water hose break. Ingenious Rudy thought to by-pass the water filter so we could have water again. We finally settled down to some serious stuff and played dominoes!!! The next day the ladies took a bus to the volcanic crater while Rudy stayed with the boat. (He wanted to be there when the 6 ferries showed up!!) While we were climbing down into the crater filled with open crevices overflowing with boiling water and smelly sulfur fumes, Rudy found a water hose and now we had filtered water again. After we came back from our bus trip, we went into town to look for some bread and goodies.it was a huge success!!! I also met Dan and Nillie from Aurora who had come into a harbor north of us the night before. We all said hello and goodbye again and hoped to meet again soon. We left Nissiros about 1 p.m. and headed back to Kos and to go north again. As we were motor sailing, we heard something break again and it sounded like a water hose. We shut off the engine and sailed into the anchorage at Ormos Kamares, Kos. We found out that it wasn't a water hose, but the automatic Halogen Fire Extinguisher in the engine room that we bought in Turkey. (The engine room got hot enough to trip the temperature setting on the automatic fire extinguisher.) Rudy and Shawn went for a swim while Nancy and I watched them turn blue!!! It was too cold for me!!! On Thursday the 23rd, we left southern Kos and headed for Leros. However, the head winds got up to 30 knots and we decided to turn around and go to the Kos Marina instead. The dock men came out to meet us in their dinghy and helped us Med Moor. The next day we were on our way to Leros. We motor sailed some of the time and a few times the wind picked up enough to just sail. We got up to about 8.3 knots and got to Leros, Ormos Xerokambos at around 6:30. As we went on to our next stop, Skala, Patmos, we encountered no wind the whole day. We tried to sail and we even tried wing and wing and finally took the sails down to Shawn's disappointment. However, when we started to Med Moor on the Quay, 20 knots on our beam came up!!! NOT FUN!!!!! The next morning, we visited the monastery built in honor of St. John the Disciple in 1088. John took the Virgin Mary to Ephesus and lived there for many years until he was exiled to Patmos in AD 95. There he went into a cave to pray and mediate and in this Holy Cave of the Apocalypse is where he saw the vision of fire and brimstone and dictated the book of Revelation to his disciple, Prochoros. Then he went back to Ephesus and died at the age of 100 years old. Before we climbed down the hill to the boat, we had lunch in a restaurant overlooking the town and the bay. It was beautiful. That night after dinner, I heard a commotion on the quay. Ten feet in front of our bow was a 130-foot motor yacht trying to fit between a little fishing boat and us. Some men on the quay moved the fishing boat and the yacht squeezed next to us with all hands pushing their boat away from hitting Boundless. We told the Captain that both his anchors were over ours and that we were leaving in the morning. He reassured us that he and his crew would help us and that he would get his yacht out of our way. The next morning he and his crew did keep their word. We maneuvered the boat under our fearless leader (that's Rudy!) and got to the last 25 feet of anchor. Then Rudy thought of dragging the anchor the last 25 feet instead of having the other boat completely take their anchor out of the water. He is soooo smart!!! The only trouble with his idea was we had half the bay on our anchor. It took a while before we could deposit it back from where it came!!! We arrived in Pythagorio, (Pythagorean theorem) Samos at around 1:30p.m again with no wind the whole day. Since Shawn and Nancy had decided to visit some sights in Turkey we went to check out of Greece only to be informed that we had to do it the same day. So Shawn and I (Shawn rowed the dinghy and I held the passports.I thought it was fair!!) went early and got checked out and we were off to Kusadasi, Turkey. There, Nancy and Shawn took about three hours to get checked in!! While we waited for them, we visited with Paul and Connie on Noah who had gotten there the day before. On May 29th, we again visited Pamukkale and Hierapolis (Rudy and I floated in the Hot Springs Pool while the Shawn and Nancy did the walking.) Then we went to see Aphrodisias while Rudy and I sat at a picnic table and had a cold drink. On May 30th, we dropped Nancy and Shawn at Ephesus after visiting a Carpet Factory, which was a very good learning experience. We spent most of the afternoon driving down dirt roads back in the lost hills of Turkey looking for unique geological rock formations which we never found. But we did find a lake! Since the weather forecast predicted the winds to be a Force 8 (Gale, , about 35 Knots) we decided to stay in Turkey until they blew over. So on out last day, the three women went and shopped at the Grand Bazaar in town. Shawn and Nancy found some gifts for their family and we had lunch in the same place we ate the night before with Connie and Paul from Noah. Then it was time for them to leave on their ferry back to Samos so they could get their flight to Athens the next day. We really enjoyed Shawn and Nancy!!! They were always smiling, helping with meals, dishes, sails and lines!!! The PERFECT GUESTS!!! We miss them already!!!
